The massive, multi-player MMORPG Destiny made waves just a couple months ago when it was released in September. Available for a wide variety of platforms, players could enjoy the shared-world experience on PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and One. Described as a first-person shooter in a mystical science fiction setting, Destiny may not have sold as many copies as publisher Activision would have liked, but players of the multi-player shooter will have something new to experience. An expansion, The Dark Below, will be released on December 9th.
1/10 What’s New?
The expansion, The Dark Below, will come with a variety of features to justify its $20 purchase. Players will be able to experience a new scenario. Namely, they will be able to travel beneath the surface of the moon and complete new missions.
A new story is in the works, involving enemies The Hive’s sinister plot to awaken a god known as Crota. There will be new weapons and abilities. And for you level grinders out there, the game’s level cap will be set to 34.
2/10 But Wait, There’s More
There will also be new competitive arenas- Pantheon, Skyshock, and the Cauldron. Players can also expect new competitive strike missions and new cooperative opportunities. There will also be five new bounty slots.
PlayStation 3 and 4 players will also have access to a console exclusive mission. Called “The Undying Mind”, it’s expected to remain a PlayStation exclusive until sometime around fall 2015. However, everyone will have access to new missions “The Will of Crota” and “Crota’s End”
3/10 It Gets Better
But you don’t have to buy the expansion to enjoy all the new features. All Destiny players will receive new updates to the gameplay. That’s right, we said all.
All Destiny players will receive access to new weapons and armor. As well, they can also benefit from the five additional bounty slots and new daily bounties. Whether that means all Destiny players will experience the new level caps remains to be seen.
But what would Destiny be without its maps? Even people reluctant to dive into Destiny have praised the often intricate maps Destiny is known for. This expansion delivers.
We’ve got new maps. And with that, ample opportunity to explore the game, with our expansion pack. Hopefully, this will help liven up the gaming experience.
5/10 More DLC
Obviously, this won’t be the last of the major expansions for Destiny. There’s plenty more additional content on the horizon. Players who purchase The Dark Below can pay an additional $15 for access to the next DLC.
House of Wolves is the next expansion on the horizon. However, little is known about it at this time. A bug earlier this year, however, revealed additional content that the next expansions are expected to add to the game, including new maps and items.
6/10 What Else is on the Horizon?
A sequel is already in the works for Destiny. While Destiny hasn’t been out for that long, evidently Activision and developer Bungie is confident Destiny can become their next billion dollar franchise.
Well, there is one thing we can be sure of. There will be sequels. Lots and lots of sequels and expansions. Evidently, there is a “10-year vision” in mind for the franchise.
7/10 10 Years? Are You Serious?
Contract deals between Bungie and Activision, which were revealed in 2012, reveal that there is a multi-sequel deal in the works for Destiny. Activision has also indicated that they have a “Lord of the Rings” style narrative in mind for the fledgling franchise.
Bungie COO Pete Parsons believes that Destiny may, in fact, make a bigger cultural impact than Bungie’s famous franchise, Halo. In fact, he’s claimed that Destiny may be as big of a classic as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Star Wars.
8/10 Is it Worth it?
Destiny has received mixed reviews from both critics and players. It remains to be seen whether or not Destiny can deliver on its promise to deliver an immersive, open world experience.
If anything, the wide variety of content that is expected to be released may eventually entice new players and jaded players to return to the game. But will this expansion pack be enough? With new maps, items, and story missions, it will at least keep players occupied for a couple days of solid gameplay. And if anything, it’s only 20 bucks.
9/10 The Dark Below
Expect to snag your copy of The Dark Below on December 9th. Players who aren’t opting into the expansion can expect their updates around the same time.
If you’re a new player, here’s your chance to get started. And if you’re finding you’re losing interest in the game, maybe this will hold your attention. But either way, with more expansions on the horizon, maybe Destiny will actually live up to Activision and Bungie’s expectations and become a franchise as big as Halo.
